My blog started out in March of 2012 largely as a writing exercise under the name "Look Out It Is a Blog." I wanted to stretch my legs and see what I enjoyed writing about the most, and what readers enjoyed reading about the most. Now, I hope to make this newer, sexier looking blog something that I update on a regular basis that provides entertainment to people online.
For those readers who stuck with me through the run of Look Out It Is a Blog, thank you and thank you twice for coming back! By way of explanation for the extended absence: I have been quietly working to update the look and interface of the website (which included, among other things, registering the domain www.thecanerdian.ca), creating and registering the various social outlets that I may want to use one day, and designing and obtaining images, fonts and graphics that were free for Commercial use - any feedback is welcome! You can leave a comment on this entry or use the contact page. Lastly and most importantly, I've been trying to build up a number of pre-planned updates such that I won't fall behind in my schedule, which will be as follows...
The CaNerdian updates three times a week. Here's what you can expect to find here:
Model Mondays
I talk about one of my favourite hobbies: modelling. Miniature modelling, that is, not getting up on a runway and strutting my stuff (though this is not completely outside the realm of possibility). Modelling is meditative, fun, addictive, and so nerdy it makes LARPers look well-adjusted (well, maybe not that much). Whenever I meet someone else who partakes in painting mold-injected plastic or gluing tiny trees to grass mats, we immediately share a connection that no non-modeller quite understands.
Note that I'm by no means an "expert" modeller, painter, or hobbyist, so please do not take any of the advice I post here as the final word on how-tos. These posts are intended to a be fun, and a look into the life of an amateur hobbyist. I will accept no personal or legal responsibility for anyone who reads these posts and subsequently injures themselves or others attempting to recreate my experience.
Check back every Monday for articles on the progress of my own miniatures, and for my personal tips and tricks on scenery building, painting and conversions.
On Wednesday, I'm going to carry on a tradition I've had of breaking down "the news." With tongue planted firmly in cheek, I aim to take on the best and worst of headlines from the Great White North, now with an increased presence of geeky goodness in the form of gaming news, sci-fi and fantasy snippits, and whatever other items of note I can trawl from the infosphere.
Look for future specials that deal with anything from Let's Plays to Podcasts...this feature could turn into a real wild card.
Fiction Fridays
While I'll use this space to put out my own fiction from time to time, the big focus of Fiction Fridays is going to be on Writing itself. It's been my experience that for all that writing is a solitary activity, there's something about forming a community around the act of creative arts that is very rewarding. When I offer criticism to fellow authors, I hope they know that it comes from a sincere desire to help them improve in any way I can.
Who am I to dish out writing advice? Well, as you can see from my bibliography, I am an accomplished writer of short fiction and theatre, with several professional credits to my name. In university I completed several writing and playwriting courses. I work in marketing communications and regularly edit and produce content for print and online purposes. By no means does this make me Robert J. Sawyer or Neil Gaiman, but rest assured you're getting an informed opinion when you read these posts.
I take great pride in the advice I offer, and I'd love to see other writers contribute their thoughts as well. With that in mind I hope people join me every Friday for some reading and scribing!
In addition to my regular 3 posts, I'll also be linking to "Other Places" every 2-3 weeks. Generally, I'll seek out and link to material myself, but if you have a website or blog that you think I or my readers might like, just contact me.
The CaNerdian is a labour of love for me. It is not my full-time job. Nobody has ever demanded or even suggested I should do it. It exists because I want it to, and that is all. Through it, I hope to give others at least a measure of the enjoyment I find in the things I write about.
Thank you for reading.
