I don't think I can pinpoint the exact moment I first got interested in models. Like many kids in the 90s, I think the proverbial "gateway drug" that led me to being the miniature junky I am today was a brightly coloured, glowing mecca of geekdom, with a simple, two word message that invited me into its warm embrace:

I don't think I can overstate the ingenious marketing strategy that Games Workshop had back then. It was simplicity itself: put the product on display in all its acrylic-painted glory, as it would appear in your home, on a detailed, gorgeous, tabletop battlefield. That kind of show is sure to draw the curiosity of any child, and from there it was a small matter of demonstrating the game itself, and you had me - doubtless millions of other kids - hook, line, and sinker.
Yet at no point in time since my introduction to Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, or for that matter any other tabletop wargame, have I ever found the time or opponent necessary to play a full game. No, what really drew me in was the construction, modelling, and painting side of this curious little subculture.
I was so drawn in, in fact, that it has led me to this:
The picture might not do it justice, so let me try to summarize. I am now in possession of over 500 individual figures, 7 tank kits, about 5 various mid-sized kits (like chariots and such), and of course a heaping pile of bits and bobs that remain (all will likely forever remain) unused.
I'm sure I'm not the only hobbyist this has happened to. There's just so many neat THINGS out there! Things to put together, things to create, things to paint! We want it all! So...I bought a lot of stuff, and painted...some of it.
So I've made a deal with myself. I'm going to assemble and paint every last miniature I ever bought, and while I do it I'm going to share the progress with the wild wonderful world of the internet. Aside from the numerous Games Workshop models I have, I've also dipped into Malifaux, Battletech, and a few others here and there.
It's going to be a long way to go before I plough through that toolbox up there, and I hope it's going to be a fun ride!
Next Monday we'll kick things off with the Empire of Men, courtesy of - you guessed it - Warhammer!
